Sacred Stitches exhibition

Sacred Stitches exhibition

The Cathedral Church of St James will be hosting an exhibition exploring the artistry of ecclesiastical embroidery Friday, October 25 to Friday, November 1, 2013.

Over 100 items have been gathered in celebration of the importance of embroidery and textile art in the creation of beauty and holiness in houses of worship of many faiths. They have come from as far away as northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and into the U.S., and include not only clerical vestments, banners and altar frontals, but items related to rituals associated with birth, marriage and death – some dating back several hundred years.
Ecclesiastical embroidery is recognized as one of the finest art forms of the Middle Ages and we will be displaying items reflecting those long standing traditions, along with changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, the Gothic Revival leading into the Arts and Crafts Movement of the mid 19th century, on to the Art Nouveau and up to contemporary fabric art of today. Admission is free, though donations welcomed! Do help in spreading the word about this very special multi-faith exhibit.

Cathedral Church of St. James, 65 Church St. & King St. East,Toronto, throughout the week from Friday, October 25 to Friday, November 1, 2013. Exhibit open 7:00 am -7:00 pm every day.
