WEEKEND WITH JANE AUSTEN April 20–22, 2012, Toronto

A weekend with Jane Austen will be presented 20–22 April 2012 by JaneAustenDancing. It will feature a combination of workshops, lectures and social events on the theme of ordinary life in Austen’s world. The event will open Friday 20 April with an evening at Historic Fort York and will feature a lamplight tour of the Regency-era Fort, a dance demonstration, fashion show and supper. Tea, coffee and desserts made by the marvellous Fort York volunteer cooks will also be served. Saturday’s program (21 April) at St. Barnabas Anglican Church on the Danforth, will feature lectures, workshops, a carefully chosen selection of Regency-related books and a modest Jane Austen shop (details on the website listed below). The afternoon will conclude with a pre-ball English Country Dance workshop suitable for beginners and experienced dancers alike, and the evening will feature a ball with decorations, live music and elegant refreshments. COSTUME JOURNAL Vol. 41, #1 BUMPER ISSUE!

The first 2011 issue of Costume Journal was delivered to members of the Costume Society of Ontario early in May. Anyone interested in current events, exhibitions and resources dealing with the wide spectrum of aspects of the field of costume will find this a persuasive reason to join the CSO!  Illustrations, colour and black & white, liven outside and inside covers and many of the forty inside pages. One article gives us a satisfying revelation of features of Palestinian and Jordanian dress with a close look at textiles and jewelry at the Jordan Museum of Popular Tradition. The author, Leslie Montgomery, passes on a rich taste of the regional distinctions, especially in the style and stitching of embroidery.  The Jordan Craft Development Centre in the capital city Amman was also a revelation, and Leslie cites contacts and publications for additional information. “WHISPERS OF WAR” GRAND BALL

Community Artists Niagara and The Niagara Falls Museum plan for “1811 – Whispers of War.” The Dispatches 2012 Project is offering a great opportunity to bring together the fruits of all their workshops and begin the celebrations of the war that brought about 200 years of peace with our neighbours. On May 13th 2011, a Grand Ball is to be held at the Addison Hall, St Marks Church, Niagara on the Lake. The dance of the times was English Country and The Dispatches 2012 Project is offering a series of four two hour dance lessons on April 7th, 14th, 28th & May 5th from 7-9pm cost $50 . These classes will be taught, with live music, by Karen Millyard, a noted English Country Dance teacher. The dances are not hard to learn, do not require a specific partner and require no previous experience.
