New book by CSO member Tina Bates

  A Cultural History of the Nurse’s Uniform by Christina Bates is the first and only in-depth analysis of the attire worn by the largest workforce in the health care system.  The book explores the role of the nurse’s uniform in creating nursing identity for over a hundred years.  Christina is the curator for the History of Canadian Home Life at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.  Her work on nursing began in 1999, with the creation of the Canadian Nursing History Collection.  In 2005 she was chief curator of the exhibition ‘A Caring Profession: centuries of Nursing in Canada’ and co-editor of On All frontiers: Four Centuries of Canadian Nursing.     The Joseph Brant Museum is pleased to welcome Fashion History Museum curator Jonathan Walford on Thursday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his traveling exhibition, “Nuclear Fashion: Selling Style to Suburbia 1946-1964”.  There will also be a book signing for Mr. Walford’s latest book, “1950s American Fashion”. COSTUME JOURNAL Vol. 41, #1 BUMPER ISSUE!

The first 2011 issue of Costume Journal was delivered to members of the Costume Society of Ontario early in May. Anyone interested in current events, exhibitions and resources dealing with the wide spectrum of aspects of the field of costume will find this a persuasive reason to join the CSO!  Illustrations, colour and black & white, liven outside and inside covers and many of the forty inside pages. One article gives us a satisfying revelation of features of Palestinian and Jordanian dress with a close look at textiles and jewelry at the Jordan Museum of Popular Tradition. The author, Leslie Montgomery, passes on a rich taste of the regional distinctions, especially in the style and stitching of embroidery.  The Jordan Craft Development Centre in the capital city Amman was also a revelation, and Leslie cites contacts and publications for additional information. The new CSO Wall Calendar for 2011 is full colour with different images of historic fashion prints for each month.  It opens to a size of 17″ long by 11″ wide and is coil bound for a very elegant presentation.  The cost is $20.00 each plus postage where applicable.  It will be available for sale at our October 26 event and at the AGM in November.
