CSO Annual General Meeting 2015 Saturday November 14, 2015, 1pm

The annual meeting of the CSO will take place  at a familiar venue, the Textile Museum of Canada, 55 Centre Street [ just south of Dundas, east of University Avenue ], on Saturday November 14, 2015, starting at 1pm. The museum is easily accessible by transit and parking is located nearby. Come out and hear the latest news, reconnect with friends and fellow members and join in the delightful discovery of fashion and costume in all their various forms and discuss the impact on society and vice versa of clothing through the ages. We are pleased to announce that a number of the present Board, whose terms are up, have agreed to stand for re-election. While these stalwarts have elected to stay on, there are still vacancies to fill in the Board and Resource Committee ranks. Important openings remain for a Vice-Chair and a Head of Publications. Fashion History Museum opens July 1st!

The FHM is located in the old post office of the former town of Hespeler at 74 Queen Street East, Cambridge, Ontario, and can be reached from the 401 via the Townline or Hespeler road exits. Starting July 1, the museum will be open regular hours Wednesday – Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Tours can be booked by appointment. Museum gallery phone 519 654-0009 Our opening exhibition in gallery one ‘Treasures from the Collection’ will feature some of the rarest and most interesting pieces from the collection including: what may be the oldest extant European-made shoe worn in North America, a paper corset, and a suit designed for Eva Peron. In gallery two ‘Back to the Eighties’ looks at the fashions from that decade through specific themes such as glamour, power, shock, innovation, and romance. Both these exhibitions will remain until the end of the year. 2015 Annual Veronika Gervers Memorial Lecture at Royal Ontario Museum Tuesday June, 23, 7-8pm

The Indian Ocean has been called the “Cradle of Globalization.” From ancient times, people and goods moved around the shores of this vast region stretching from Indonesia in the East to Africa in the West.  Everywhere, the most highly desired trade item were the printed cottons made in India. With their vivid colours and beautiful patterns, these Indian cottons caused a fashion sensation in Europe, too, after 1600. This lecture explores the ROM’s unknown, early collection of Indian cotton textiles that were traded to Egypt in medieval times. It considers their intriguing designs and how they were made, and places them within the wider Indian Ocean trade of the time. The early genius of India’s textile manufacturers in producing for a vast variety of regional markets is discussed, together with the remarkable range of social roles they came to play in the societies that imported them.
