FASHION HISTORY MUSEUM ACQUISITIONS EXHIBITION

Open Drawers, 2009, an exhibition at the Guelph Civic Museum will  show highlights from the Fashion History Museum’s First Year of Acquisitions. This will  open from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. on August 15 and will remain on display daily from 1 – 5 p.m. until August 30. The display will range from a late 18th century dressing table from the Liberty’s of London family to fashions by Worth, Biba, Westwood and Versace. Jessica Biffi, the young Canadian designer who appeared on Project Runway Canada, will present one of the dresses made from her design for the Winners challenge on the show. Her dress will inaugurate the Fashion History Museum’s collection of contemporary Canadian clothing known as our History in the Making collection. Refreshments will be served at the opening and there is no charge, although donations will be gladly accepted. SECOND COSTUME COLLOQUIUM IN FLORENCE, NOVEMBER 2010

Following the great success of the first Costume Colloquium: A Tribute to Janet Arnold, dedicated to dress studies, history, conservation and creation (held in Florence, Italy, 6-9 November, 2008 attended by over 315 participants from 26 countries with 39 presentations on 8 themes), there will be a second symposium, again in Florence from the 4th to the 7th of November, 2010 dedicated to the subject of Dress for Dance. TAMBOUR LACE WORKSHOP

St. Marys Museum offers a 3-day workshop in Lier (Tambour) Lace given by Greet Rome-Verbeylen, author, designer and teacher of Lier lace from  Lier, Belgium.  This will run July 6, 7 and 8, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, for up to 12 students. This will be 18 hours of class time, some spent studying examples of the tambour work (chain-stitched lace) of Margaret Weir, a Scottish immigrant and lacemaker in the late 1800s, to keep her designs and filling stitches alive in contemporary lacemaking. Students will also be learning to make this lace in the house once owned by Margaret that is now St. Marys Museum, the workshop venue. SPECIAL CURATOR’S TOUR for CSO, TEXTILE MUSEUM OF CANADA

A special exhibit tour of “The Cutting Edge” will be given at the Textile Museum of Canada by the curator, Patricia Bentley to CSO members and friends, Wednesday April 22, 2009, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., numbers limited. This exhibition focuses on the shape of a garment and what it signifies. Garments from the Museum’s collection are featured against contemporary objects that range from the haute couture of Issey Miyake and Yosiki Hisinuma, to the fashion designs of Rashmi Varma and Yumi Eto, and the work of artists Lyn Carter and Lily Yung. ROM LECTURE – CHRISTIAN DIOR: HISTORY & MODERNITY

Coming up soon, important ROM Vaughan Lecture Friday, March 6, 5:30–6:30 p.m., on “Christian Dior: History & Modernity,” given by Alexandra Palmer, Department of World Cultures, Royal Ontario Museum. This talk will discuss how Christian Dior became, as Time Magazine noted, “Atlas, holding up the entire French fashion industry” in the 1950s.Opening his Paris haute couture salon 12 February 1947, Dior designed the New Look, and went on working not only with traditional haute couture methods, but also developing new techniques for production and licensing related products. Within six years, the house of Christian  Dior accounted for 55% of all Paris exports, was an international household name, and dominated women’s fashion in the post-war years.
