Costume Society of Ontario AGM, November 15, 2014 at 1pm

The annual meeting of the CSO will take place  at a familiar venue, the Textile Museum of Canada, 55 Centre Street [ just south of Dundas, east of University Avenue ]. The museum is easily accessible by transit and parking is located nearby. Come out and hear the latest news, reconnect with friends and fellow members and join in the delightful discovery of fashion and costume in all their various forms and discuss the impact on society and vice versa of clothing through the ages. We are pleased to announce that a number of the present Board, whose terms are up, have agreed to stand for re-election. While these stalwarts have elected to stay on, there are still vacancies to fill in the Board and Resource Committee ranks. Important openings remain for a Vice-Chair and a Head of Publications. Fashion at the ROM this fall

The ROM has a great range of fashion activities this fall: Fashion for Real Life, 7 October 2014, 7pm Iconic fashion journalist Jeanne Beker hosts world-renown Canadian designer Izzy Camilleri,  Toronto based writer and nationally recognized advocate Barbara Turnbull, and structural engineer and co-founder of Stop-Gap Foundation Luke Anderson, as they explore the impact of adaptive design on the world of fashion and beyond. Wealth of dress exhibitions this summer!

Babes and Bathers – the history of the swimsuit at Vancouver Maritime Museum There’s a wonderful selection of dress and textiles exhibitions on display this summer in Toronto, Ontario and beyond!  The Royal Ontario Museum has just opened Fashion Follows Form: Design for Sitting which explores the fascinating and challenging issue of designing clothing for wheelchair users and reveals the history of functional design that grounds this work.  Also on display are early Islamic Textiles in the exhibition Cairo Under Wraps. The Bata Shoe Museum presents Fashion Victims – the Perils and Pleasures of Dress in the 19th century which examines the darker side of fashionable dress in the Victorian age, from arsenic dresses to shoe shine boys, and asks us to consider the true cost of fashion. Over at the Textile Museum the ancient and the futuristic are both on offer in The Eternity Code: Archaeology, Textiles and Preservation and Fashioning the Intangible: The conceptual clothing of Ying Gao.
